From 1989, then aged in his 70s, through to his death in 2001, John Lee Hooker came again to reap the considerable rewards and critical recognition he richly deserved, strongly revitalizing a career which had peaked 25 years earlier.

Metro Doubles delve into the Savoy archives here with a winning combination of some of his first ever recordings, rarely available on CD, made in 1948/49, and sides from a decade later showing a natural development towards the more accessible blues which inspired the white rock artists of the 60s. Light years away from the highly polished albums The Healer and Mr. Lucky which featured stellar guests Santana, Robert Cray, Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt, the late 40s material finds The Boogie Man full of the unrefined brooding menace which coursed through all his best work, and in the 50s too, Hooker just couldn’t avoid retaining the eerie power of that majestic sound.
