A true Londoner, Stephen Paxton was born there in 1735 and died there in 1787. Both Stephen and his brother, William, were active in the London’s musical circles both composing and performing. The six sonatas were composed so that they could be performed by different instrumental combinations, in this case cello or bassoon and accompanied by a second cello/bassoon or even better a keyboard or a harp. Stephen Paxton’s fluent and graceful melodic style, similar to that of J.C.Bach, shows a tendency towards a simpler, more popular style, characteristic of the development of English music during the 1770’s and 1780’s.
