The turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries were periods that witnessed adevelopment in instrumental music plus the need for music that could beperformed in drawing rooms. This oriented composers towards scores for fewperformers and three genres in particular – Song, piano music and chamber.Midway between the latter two, 4 hand developed as it allowed musicians ofdifferent levels to participate together in the same performance.Faure’s Dolly was the first major masterpiece of French music for piano 4hands. The Cras piece Ames d’enfant was initially written for six little hands,those of the composer’s three daughters, before being transcribed andpublished in 1918 in the 4 hand version.
