o Yann Tiersen, the French cross-genre, multi-instrumentalist, and composer of the soundtracks to Amelie and Goodbye Lenin, as well as his own idiosyncratic, mainly instrumental albums - delayed work on his next release to work on the music for this documentary about the life and times of French sailor Eric Tabarly.
o Tabarly, known as ‘The Sage of the Ocean’, was a French naval officer, who went on to become a renowned yachtsman in international competitions and round the world racing. In 1972 was awarded the Légion de Honneur. He was washed overboard in 1998, and his body was recovered 5 weeks later, off the coast of Ireland by a French trawler. Tabarly himself provides the narration for the film, directed by Pierre Marcel.
o Tiersen’s trademark sound is immediately recognisable, although there is perhaps an even more minimalist classical feel than on his other work. The melodic, evocative pieces are also more piano-driven than previously but are still typically augmented by a wide variety of instruments including violin, accordeon, guitars, ukulele, marimba, wulitzer, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, cello, ondes martenot, melodica, toy piano, vibes, percussion and hand-bells. |
