During the late Fifties, Detroit saw the emergence of some of the finest neo-bop jazzmen, among them Curtis Fuller and Sylvester “Sonny Red” Kyner, two of the most significant young-blood representatives of the movement. These 1957 quintet recordings, recorded in Hackensack in1957, amply illustrate the wealth of talent emerging from Detroit that left its invigorating mark on the New York scene in the late Fifties.

The personnel featured on this 2CD set includes: Curtis Fuller (tb), Sonny Red (as), Hank Jones, Red Garland, Tommy Flanagan (p), Doug Watkins, Paul Chambers, George Tucker (b), and Louis Hayes (d). Material is taken from the Prestige albums “New Trombone” and “Curtis Fuller with Red Garland”.

Fuller, a 23-year old disciple of trombonist J. J. Johnson, displayed, even then, full command of his horn, playing with a vibrato-less style, flowing conception and a slightly greater dynamic range than his mentor. Sonny Red, 25-years-old at the time, was a player with a pungent attack, fierce drive and a truly Bird-inspired emotional strength.
