Johnny Cash. The name alone has an almost mythical resonance. And that's before you consider the canyon-deep voice and the all-black attire: a cowboy in mourning for his life or a penitent hell-fire preacher.
He was discovered by Sun Records founder Sam Phillips - who also discovered Elvis - after the young man from Kingsland, Arkansas first introduced himself as a gospel singer. Phillips apparently told him to go away and 'be a little bit of a sinner for a while' and see what he could come up with…
After Phillips had sold Elvis to RCA he was looking to promote talent in Presley's stead. Cash was one of the benefactors alongside close friend, Carl Perkins. The pair toured constantly, grew tighter and more competent and pretty soon the hits started to flow.
Johnny Cash’s three year stint at Sun ended rather acrimoniously. In 1957, a year before his contract was due to run out, Cash was approached by Columbia, and signed an option. Cash has since explained that he was attracted by a higher royalty rate and a promise that he could produce a religious album - but, truth be told, he wasn't entirely straight with Phillips.
What remains undeniable, however, is that Johnny Cash has become known the world over for his simple but deeply moving songs of love and loss, sung in a voice which is not only unique in the field of Country & Western, but in all popular music.
