Before becoming an “outlaw” and superstar in his own right, Willie Nelson was one of country music’s most successful songwriters. He wrote ‘Crazy’ for Patsy Cline in 1961 and ‘Night Life’, a massive hit for Ray Price (said to be the most covered country song of all time) among many other classics. This collection draws largely from Nelson's 60s compositions and the stripped down quality of many of these recordings naturally accentuates his quirky phrasing and attractively weathered voice, focusing attention on terrific songs such as the aforementioned ‘Night Life’, the aching ‘Face Of A Fighter’ and the untypically sweet and optimistic ‘The Shelter Of Your Arms’.
