The Acid Jazz sound was one of the most vibrant and innovative musical movements of the late 80s and early 90s. Starting as a direct reaction to the monotonous thud of acid house, the scene developed its own identity and made its home in a sweaty basement club in London. Dedicated regulars to these Sunday sessions could hear a diverse selection of old and new grooves that included everything from upbeat Funk and Hip-Hop to Afro-Cuban Jazz, Soul and even early Breakbeat.
To keep the scene and the sound alive Peterson went into partnership with Eddie Piller and set up the Acid Jazz label and concentrated on signing acts that would further the cause and keep the funk in dance music. The labels dedication to the groove eventually paid off when a number of acts achieved notable success such as James Taylor Quartet, the Brand New Heavies, Galliano, and Jamiroquai.
Despite its demise as a trendy musical genre the Acid Jazz movement was truly ahead of its time. It paved the way for a whole new generation of independent records labels allowing fresh musical genres to come through such as Trip Hop, Nu-Phunk or even Breakbeat. Ultimately it showed people that Jazz, Funk and Soul weren’t just musical styles of the past but could evolve in a modern way and still be present at the forefront of the dance and club scene.
This CD brings together some of the funkiest Acid Jazz releases covering a mixture of sounds from raw funk and Jazz to Breakbeat and Drum ‘n’ Bass. And gives you a chance to discover or re-discover some of the music whose legacy has kept the diversity and soul in club music. Get ready to feel the groove!
