One of the most critically acclaimed singer/songwriters to have emerged in the 1960s, Van Morrison’s bluesy voice, unique arrangements and penchant for writing catchy hits have resulted in five decades of outstanding albums and concert performances.

The Early Years features Van Morrison’s late 60s recordings for Bert Bern’s Bang label and include the classics TB Sheets, Brown Eyed Girl and Madame George. Based in New York, Berns had formed a record label following his success in writing `Twist And Shout’. He had met Van while Van was touring the US with Them and convinced of Van’s ability to write hit singles had him flown out to the US at the company’s expense to record eight sides for four singles. The relationship would ultimately sour as Berns, the studio band and Van all fought over artistic control of the songs Van had written but before then Van recorded a truly ground-breaking series of tracks – the very best of which are included on this compilation.
