Bono dubbed her 'the Noelle Coward of her Generation’, Morrissey, once said that 'she was a supreme original’ and her father was Ewan MacColl, famed folk singer and writer of classics such as ‘Dirty Old Town’ and ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’.

Kirsty MacColl combined a pristine 60s girl-group vocal sound with some very witty lyrics and a dash of new wave sass, marking her out as one of the most endearing and unique voices of the last twenty years. It is these qualities that first interested Stiff records when they plucked her from disastrously named group The Drug Addix and made a move for her as a solo artiste. Her first release ‘They Don't Know’, garnered massive airplay but due to a strike at Stiff's distributors never achieved the success it deserved.

Then after problems with her second single she parted company with Stiff to join Polydor where she got her first taste of chart success with ‘There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis’. But the follow-up hit never came and returning to Stiff with producer-husband Steve Lillywhite in tow to re-launch her career with the delicious pop single ‘Terry’. Then in early 1985 her cover of Billy Bragg's ‘A New England’ went Top Ten and she looked like she was away and running. But as before the follow-up, ‘He's On The Beach’, failed to make an impression. By this point the cracks in the Stiff edifice were beginning to show and Kirsty herself was having to commit more to her family and she fell to doing sessions, most notably with fellow Stiff artistes the Pogues. A collaboration which yielded ‘Fairytale Of New York’ and precipitated her move to Virgin.

MacColl continued to write wonderful songs and music right up to the day of her untimely death in a boating accident off the coast of Mexico in 2000. This compilation of her earliest material pays tribute to an artist whose benign, maverick genius and quirky sense of humour will be greatly missed.
