A hard rock act with a considerable pedigree, Atomic Rooster – led by the late Vincent Crane – signed to Pye Records’ progressive imprint, Dawn, in 1972. A reconfigured line-up, which now featured UK chart-topper Chris Farlowe on vocals, cut two LPs for the label.

Made In England and Nice ‘N’ Greasy plowed a funkier, more soulful furrow than their previous releases and this 18-track compilation comprises the best of both records, revealing that the band arguably hit its richest vein of form during this period.

Some fans might disagree, no doubt, attributing Atomic Rooster’s unlikely metamorphosis into a funky chicken as an aberration on the part of keyboardist Crane, who in interviews during this period said he drew inspiration from the work of James Brown and The Temptations. But the music on Made In England and Nice ‘N’ Greasy has found additional favour in recent years with funk and breakbeat collectors and many aficionados rate these recordings as the band’s most exciting.
