Hailing from Ferriday, Louisiana, Jerry Lee Lewis was an irrepressible showman with a hard-won reputation as a hellraiser, who established himself as rock & roll’s first great wild man at Sun records in the late 1950s.

His debut single ‘Crazy Arms’ was released - as Sun 259 - on 1st December 1956. But it was late in 1957 before it really happened for him, with the double A-side: ‘It’ll Be Me’ and - the song that would be forever identified with “The Killer”- ‘Great Balls Of Fire’. Though kept off the top in the States by Danny & The Juniors’ ‘At The Hop’, the song reached #1 in the UK in time for Christmas 1957 - and further hits followed, with such rock classics as ‘Breathless’ and ‘High School Confidential’.

While much of his later success was found in country circles, this collection also lets you hear Jerry Lee’s take on such established favourites as ‘What’d I Say’ and ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’. But it is as a 50s rock & roller that Jerry Lee will always be best remembered - and from that truly Golden Age come his inimitable takes on ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’, ‘Matchbox’, ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’, ‘Hello Josephine’ and the defiant ‘(I Don’t Want To) Hang Up My Rock & Roll Shoes’.

Throughout all of rock & roll’s fiery half-century history, there was never anyone quite like Jerry Lee Lewis. Maybe it’s that sneering, confident vocal; that golden-haired arrogance; or just the fluid, pounding piano that sounds like no-one else ever sounded.
