Known as “The Gentle Genius”, the late Curtis Mayfield was a songwriter, musician, producer and entrepreneur of immense vision, taste and humanity. Not perhaps as iconic as Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown or Marvin Gaye, his influence has been just as profound and far-reaching.

Everyone from Bob Marley to Paul Weller has taken inspiration from the Windy City auteur. Echoes of his distinctive sound can be detected in recently acclaimed albums by neo-soul exponents, Raphael Saadiq and Van Hunt, while his old records have been sampled and reconfigured by a legion of hip-hop and R&B groove robbers. Most recently, a substantial loop from Superfly was used as the rhythmic platform for the hit duet Tilt Ya Head Back by Nelly and Christina Aguilera.

The “Gentle Genius” may have gone, but as revealed here, his timeless music and its universal themes of love, peace and understanding live on. As the man once urged: Get down!
