• In the early ' 50s Harry Belafonte was acting in fringe theatre groups and singing folk songs in Greenwich Village clubs. Popular success, rivalling that of Elvis Presley, came when he incorporated Calypso, Worksongs and Spirituals into a light entertainment format.

• His 1956 LP "Calypso" was the first-ever million seller and is included in this two CD set alongside other recordings from this period. Among the 40 tracks are hit songs with which Belafonte will always be associated -- "Scarlet Ribbons", "Banana Boat Song", "Island in the Sun" and more
