• Allyn Ferguson's multi-instrumental group's mission was to synthesise jazz and classical music disciplines and these two 1957 LPs highlight different facets of their work

• On the first, self titled album they interlace formal themes familiar to classical music listeners with the elements of spontaneity and rhythmic changes which are central to jazz

• In contrast the second record is in fact a reading of his work by the poet Kenneth Patchen, much admired by Henry Miller and the beat poets. The Chamber Jazz Sextet arrangements were created as an underscore to the readings -- music designed to fortify the emotional content of the poetry
