• Clarinettist (who also played bassoon, flute, oboe) Garvin Bushell was in at the beginning of recorded jazz, graduating from vaudeville to join Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds. Cut records with James P. Johnson & Fats Waller, later joined Fletcher Henderson, Chick Webb orchestras and even played his part in the modern era,recording with John Coltrane and the Gil Evans Orchestra

• This 1982 session with a small combo set up by former pupil Richard Hadlock (soprano sax) features the lively octogenarian on numbers that he learned many years before while playing and touring with some of the great jazz bands
