• The complete 1959 The Ivory Hunters album, which presents a quartet with the unusual combination of two pianos, bass and drums. Bill Evans plays the piano on the right channel, while Bob Brookmeyer lays down his trombone to play piano opposite Evans, on the left channel. Percy Heath, bass; Connie Kay, drums complete the line-up.
• As a bonus to this interesting session, this CD adds a complete session, the same year, that also features both Evans and Brookmeyer (the latter now on trombone) as part of a group arranged by Jimmy Giuffre, plus three terrific tunes by Evans at Newport ’57, one of which, “I Love You”, is in a trio format.
• These were not Brookmeyer’s first piano recordings. He had done a lot of piano playing with Jimmy Giuffre’s trio the previous year, and before that (1955) he had recorded an album called The Dual Role of Bob Brookmeyer, on which he alternated between the piano and trombone. This recording possibly encouraged Evans’ later incursions into multi-tracking himself on the albums ‘Conversations With Myself’ (1963) and ‘Further Conversations With Myself’ (1967).
