• “In Search of the Mystery” is Gato Barbieri’s forceful, uncompromising, debut album as leader, and was recorded for ESP on March 15, 1967, with Gato Barbieri: tenor saxophone; Calo Scott: cello; Norris Jones (Sirone): bass; and Bobby Kapp: drums.

• Barbieri’s earlier recordings (apart from a private pressing in 1960) were with Don Cherry’s band on “Togetherness” (Inner City 1965), “Complete Communion” (1965) and “Symphony for Improvisers”(1966) both on Blue Note.

• Four extended compositions by Barbieri, played with powerful creativity by the quartet in a style where strident, free improvisation meets a more impressionistic, hard bop. Barbieri himself plays with a possessed energy, reminiscent of Coltrane, Shepp or Pharoah Sanders at their most unrestrained.

It houses 39 mins of white heat laced with soft velvet, perfectly encapsulating the intensity and other worldliness of the "New Thing".
