• Phil Seamen was arguably the greatest jazz drummer Europe has ever produced. He was up there, alongside such contemporaries as Kenny Clarke and Philly-Joe Jones - creative, and with a wonderful feel for time, a true personality with a recognisable sound and approach. A legend in his own lifetime, he died in 1972. This album of highlights of his playing is a salute that is long overdue.

• Some know him only as the mentor of rock drummer Ginger Baker, but Phil Seamen had been a jazz star and acclaimed drummer throughout the 1950s, setting the standard, and despite his drug problems this continued into the 1970s.

• Here he is featured in bands led by Jack Parnell, Victor Feldman, Joe Harriott, Dizzy Reece, Stan Tracey, Jimmy Witherspoon, Kenny Graham, Harold McNair, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe. The tracks are from between 1953 and 1972, and have been lovingly remastered. The 24-page booklet is the first comprehensive history and expert evaluation of this extraordinary musician.
