• Johan Sara Jr. has taken traditional sami music and stretched traditions as much as possible, utilizing the ‘yoik’ vocal tradition - one of the world’s oldest singing techniques. The music is beautiful, energetic and sounds contemporary – taking the famous sound of Mari Boine one step further. Johan Sara Jr. Group has existed since 1994 and many respected musicians have been involved in Johan Sara’s projects.

• For the uninitiated, ‘yoik’ is the name of the ancient Sámi vocal expression that is so much more than an artistic or cultural expression in the commonplace sense of the word. In its original form the yoik was functional : it was a way of structuring the world and of naming and sustaining its entities.

• His group uses saxophone, flute, trumpet, guitar, synthesizer, drums, percussion and programming. Johan Sara was born in Alta, in the snow-covered tundra of the Scandinavian Artic, and is one of the leading artists of the Sami music scene. He appeared at the 2009 Womex showcases, in Copenhagen.
