Nikolai Kapustin started composing even before he entered the Moscow Conservatory, making his first attempt at a piano sonata at the age of 13. During the 1950s he acquired a reputation as a jazz pianist, arranger and composer. He is steeped, therefore, in both the traditions of classical virtuoso pianism and improvisational jazz. Pianist Shan-shan Sun’s virtuosic performances have been heard by audiences around the world, and one recent American review of this recording said “This was a big, expansive reading of a gorgeous score. Sun’s intensity in particular brought to mind Alicia de Larrocha’s visionary Mozart interpretations”
