• Julien Lourau is a widely acclaimed French tenor & soprano saxophonist, based in Marseilles, who has recorded 6 previous albums for Label Bleu and two for Warners France. His new band, Quartet Siagon, was formed in 2007, named after the city of their debut performance, and features pianist Laurent Coq - a long-standing collaborator of Lourau’s - with top New York rhythm section Thomas Bramerie and drummer Otis Brown III.

• Julien Lourau and Quartet Saigon are appearing at The Vortex on 8th & 9th February 2010.

• This is a flowing, inventive album, with all material composed by Lourau and Coq, except for a fine reading of the Bacharach/David ballad "A House is Not a Home." Lourau’s solos are thoroughly absorbing, whether strong and gritty or delicate and melodic - Rollins & Shorter are key, bedrock influences. Coq too provides pleasing solos and thoughtful accompaniment; and the band as a unit have a tight, creative rapport.
