• A rare occasion to hear the 1950’s John Lewis in a trio format : John Lewis’ complete 1959 album “Improvised Meditations and Excursions”, in which the pianist abandoned his typical MJQ line-up to play relaxed trio pieces.

• Further tracks featuring John Lewis’ piano as the primary instrument in trio and duet formats (which were rarities for him) have been added as a bonus. “Little Girl Blue” and “D & E” both come from the 1957 LP “The John Lewis Piano” (the rest of the album consisted of duets by John Lewis with Connie Kay on one tune, with Jim Hall on another – both added here as bonus tracks.
