In December 2008, the well-known American singer-songwriter Vonda Shepard released From the Sun, her first studio album in five years. Early in 2009, she began a tour of 24 European cities - and this live album was recorded at the San Javier festival, in Spain, on 21 February 2009.
Vonda played this concert with her band, which included three outstanding American musicians: James Ralston (guitar and vocals) played 20 years in the band of Tina Turner and others; Jim Hanson (bass and vocals) played with Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen; and Michael Urbano (drums and percussion) who played with Smash Mouth.
In addition to songs from the "From the Sun" album, this live CD also includes familiar hits from Shepard's "Ally McBeal" era : "Baby Do not You listen to Break My Heart Slow" and "Maryland". She also gives a rousing version of the Stax Records classic "Respect Yourself", a worldwide hit for The Staple Singers.
Shepard began her career with appearances in clubs in the area of Los Angeles at the age of 14. She toured with Rickie Lee Jones and Al Jarreau in her early 20s and had a top ten US single "Can Not We Try" when she was 25.
She has released six studio albums, a live album, a concert DVD, and four soundtracks for Ally McBeal. In addition to her performances in the show, Shepard was also music producer. Her 2004 CD / DVD Live: A Retrospective also included interviews with Jackson Browne, the Indigo Girls, Al Jarreau and others.
