Some twenty years before going to the Dark Continent with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in Out of Africa (and winning yet another best score Oscar!) John Barry journeyed to Kenya for the adventures of Elsa the lioness in the 1964 classic BORN FREE. Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers starred in the adaptation of Joy Adamson’s book about Elsa the lioness, who was raised as a pet by two Kenya game wardens.
Barry’s score is lush, exotic and beautiful. John Barry is at his romantic best. This CD joins Varèse Sarabande’s Film Classics series, which also includes Barry’s best-selling Out of Africa and Somewhere In Time. Recorded in 20-bit digital sound, this BORN FREE contains music never before available, including a couple of pieces not even found in the final cut of the film. This is the most complete Born Free ever and the score’s CD debut.
A true classic that has stood the test of time.
