The Last Butterfly, an adaptation of a novel by Michael Jacot, takes place in 1944. Antoine Moreau, a great French mime whose career is on the wane, is forced by the Germans to perform in the "Free State" of Terezin, the Czech village which Hitler "gave" to the Jews. The Germans tell him that he only has to perform once, that the show is for the children who live there, that he'll be paid for his work and that his return to Paris is absolutely guarantied.

What the Germans don't tell Antoine is that the city is in fact a sophisticated propaganda weapon intended to reassure a Red Cross delegation and, consequently, international opinion. To make sure that everything will go smoothly, the Germans let Antoine have whatever he needs - the most beautiful scenery, elaborate costumes, and Europe's most talented musicians, like Rheinberg, former conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

But Antoine develops a special bond with the children he meets and uses as actors in his production of "Hänsel and Gretel". Soon he discovers that this charming town, this so-called Jewish paradise, is nothing but a sordid hoax, and the people who live there are only pretending to be happy. They have to - their lives depend on it. Can Antoine, through the silent language of mime, tell the outside world what is really happening here in Terezin ?

The Last Butterfly stars Tom Courtney and Brigitte Fossey and features a musical score by Alex North. The eighty year old North composed the scores for A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of A Salesman, Spartacus and Good Morning Viet-Nam.

A truly magnificent score !
