In 1842, four years after his Berlin debut as an author of vocal lyrics, Moniuszko had already penned several operettas and a number of lieder, which he decided to publish in a collection that became the first Home Songbook. This was a period when he was exploring the use of poetic text in his song compositions and to quote the composer – “ I tried to select poems from the best poets, and precisely, rustic songs or village songs from the banks of the Neman….in the conviction that these poetic works presented the most national colour and nature.”
