• These historic recordings by Rory Block and Stefan Grossman go back to 1963/64 when Grossman was 18 and Block amazingly only 13, but already an adept guitarist. These recordings were later issued, in 1967, on Elektra, as ‘How To Play Blues Guitar’, and then reissued later on Kicking Mule, in the 1970s.

• There are two previously unissued tracks from this session included, plus two tracks recorded by Block and Grossman with the great Son House in 1971. The remainder of the 31 tracks were from a session of Block-Grossman duets recorded by Nick Perls (founder of Yazoo and Blue Goose Records) in 1967, by which time Rory was a comparatively elderly 17 years old !

• It’s fascinating to listen to these dedicatedly researched and precisely played versions of classic country blues by two young enthusiasts, who both went on to great success. Rory Block becoming one of the world’s leading acoustic blues performers, with an impressive list of album releases; and Stefan Grossman becoming one of the pioneers of the folk-blues movement, an important fingerstyle guitarist, educator and music historian who founded the Kicking Mule label and has overseeing many other roots music projects.
