• A collage of interviews and music telling the story of the banjo from its introduction to America by African slaves, when the sound box was made from a gourd with vellum stretched over it, to the modern-day instrument.
• Largely abandoned by black musicians during the 20th century the banjo became synonymous with the music of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains and was taken up in droves during the folk revival by aspiring young urban hillbillies from the North.
• Footage of Old-Timey music festivals includes a brief appearance by Doc Watson, there's a visit to a banjo maker’s workshop, Frank Hamilton recalls a 1954 trip to the Southern states with Rambling Jack Elliott and three Seegers are interviewed while demonstrating their picking skills -- Pete, Mike and Peggy. The film is in fact dedicated to Mike Seeger, who died in 2009.
• 110 minutes. NTSC all regions. English language only
