• Filmed in 1987, Antonio Brasileiro, is a fascinating documentary homage to the maestro, Tom ‘Antonio Carlos’ Jobim - recorded in New York during spring time and in Rio de Janeiro during the fall. It was directed by Roberto Talma, following the script written by Euclides Marinho and Nelson Motta. This special was aired on Brazilian TV on the 29th of May, 1987, and exported internationally - it won many awards.
• Narrated by Aloysio de Oliveira,it starts in the Museum of Natural History in New York, with Tom taling of climate change, followed by a view of the Central Park to the sound of ‘Two Kites’ and playing a section of ‘Desafinado’ on a classical guitar, in the park.. Back in museum, Tom talks of the tranquility of Ipanema.
• Back in Rio Tom revisits part of his repertoire from two of his most recent albums (‘Terra Brasilis’ and ‘Passarim’), in duets with Joyce, Gal Costa, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo. Paula Morelenbaum concludes with a perfomance of the ‘Bachianas Brasileiras nº 5’, by Villa-Lobos, listening to Tom speaking off record.
• In the last segment, just like in New York, where Tom left the studio and headed to Central Park, the maestro walks through Jardim Botânico (the Botanical Gardens of Rio) and sits down on a park bench, and recites two masterpieces from poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade. |
