• This is the new band that Basie began to build in 1951-- though he had some veterans, most of the musicians were young and relatively unknown.

• The rhythm section was the focal point of the band, with drummer Gus Johnson in the driving seat. The brass included trumpeter Joe Newman and trombonists Benny Powell and Henry Coker; Marshall Royal led the excellent sax section, featuring tenorists Paul Quinichette, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and even the great Lester Young is heard as a guest in the Live at Birdland performances which appear on the 2nd disc.

Jazz Journal - George Hulme
The Basie band of 1952 was a fine group with great arrangements, skilfully played with good solos.
