• For the first time ever on DVD, an outstanding 1969 solo piano performance by Monk playing Duke Ellington’s music, for the first time since his 1955 Riverside LP. As a bonus, there is a complete set recorded for the Japanese TV with his regular quartet, in Tokyo in 1963.

• The 1969 Berliner Jazztage Festival, included this special 70th birthday tribute to Ellington. Several artists appeared, including Miles Davis & Lionel Hampton. Monk was one of six pianists brought on to perform solo pieces. He dug deep into his Duke bag and pulled 3 numbers from his 1955 Riverside LP: ‘Sophisticated Lady’. ‘Caravan’, and ‘Solitude’ – and surprised diehard Monk fans with a rendition of ‘Satin Doll’. For someone who rarely played Duke’s music, he exhibited an astonishing mastery over the material.

• This DVD contains brilliantly filmed colour footage of Monk’s complete Berlin performance, including the aforementioned tunes plus a short version of his own “Crepuscule with Nellie”, and a duet with pianist Joe Turner.

• Personnel : Thelonious Monk, solo piano, plus on one track : Joe Turner (p), Han Rettenbacher (b) & Stu Martin (d) - Berlin Philarmonie, Berlin, Germany, November 6, 1969. Bonus tracks : Thelonious Monk, piano; Charlie Rouse, tenor sax; Butch Warren, bass; Frankie Dunlop, drums - Tokyo, Japan, May 23, 1963.

• Total Time: 64:17 mins. - 11 tracks - Colour (Berlin) / B&W (Tokyo) / Mono - compatible with all DVD players
