• Portuguese-born singer Carmen Miranda (1909-1955) was the first Brazilian pop star - dubbed ‘The Brazilian Bombshell’. She was a highly successful star in Hollywood films and on Broadway, and her samba-pop records were big sellers, from the late 1930s to the mid-50s. She became especially associated with the fruit hat outfit she wore in the 1943 movie ‘The Gang's All Here’; and was at one time cited as the highest-paid woman in the US.

• Musician and music producer Henrique Cazes, a serious and passionate scholar of Brazilian music, had always regretted that the recording quality and even the musical arrangements of Carmen Miranda’s original recordings were unsatisfactory - and so for this album, ‘Carmen Miranda Hoje (Today)’, he took 12 songs she recorded for the Odeon label between 1935 and 1940, remastered her voice and recorded completely new backing arrangements - with bass guitar, ukulele, woodwind, percussion and strings.

• Some purists may call this heresy, but Cazes’ results are certainly remarkable and testify to the care and faithfulness with which he has overseen this project - enabling long-standing and newer Miranda fans to appreciate her talent and charisma, with a technical quality and musical sensitivity that were not available to her over 70 years ago.

• This release also includes bonus video material, including testimonials by Ruy Castro, the singer's biographer, and by Henrique Cazes, who justifies his approach and explains his techniques.
