• This 3 CD set contains all existing Birdland broadcasts by the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop in 1961-62, on a single set for the first time. These long unavailable broadcasts feature such important musicians as Booker Ervin, Yusef Lateef, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles McPherson, Jaki Byard, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Dannie Richmond.
• Among the many highlights is the drummer-less broadcast of May 12, 1962, which presents two bassists on Mingus’ only existing live version of Ysabel’s Table Dance, from Tijuana Moods. One broadcast is previously unissued; and Mingus also is the piano soloist on two broadcasts.
• Personnel : Charles Mingus, bass, piano & leader, with: Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Yusef Lateef (flute), Rahsaan Roland Kirk (tenor sax, manzello, stritch), Booker Ervin (tenor sax), Charles McPherson (alto sax), Pepper Adams (baritone sax), Richard Williams, Edward Armour (trumpet), Don Butterfield (tuba), Jaki Byard, Toshiko Akiyoshi (piano), Henry Grimes, Doug Watkins, Herman Wright (bass), Dannie Richmond (drums).
• De Luxe 3 CD Set - Newly remastered - Total Time : 184:73 mins - 27 tracks - Includes 20-page booklet.
• The music on this set comes from non-professional recordings taken from live radio broadcasts, and although the sound quality is generally very good throughout, there is occasional static and a slight surface noise on some tracks, which couldn’t be completely suppressed without affecting the music. However, this music is pure gold. It was made by Mingus at a high point of his career, and we must be thankful that this music exists at all. |

Reviews |
| Record Collector - Charles Waring |
| The sound quality is remarkably good, as are the performances by Mingus and his cohorts. *** |
| Jazz Journal - Peter Gamble |
| The seemingly chaotic melange crackles with electricity, Mingus himself supplying much of the power, his sidemen reacting as he would wish. |
