• A favourite of Delbert McClinton & Doug Sahm, Ray Sharpe is one of the few black musicians who successfully blended rock & roll, blues and country music. Sharpe has been called a “black rockabilly” musician and has actually been praised for sounding “white”, a role reversal of normal racial relations involving rock & roll/R&B vocal performances.

• His Texan style encompasses all of the best elements of early rock. As a singer-songwriter, he has mined Chuck Berry-type humour from the situations and wordplay in his songs. As a guitarist, he alternates snarling single note Albert King guitar bends with twangy, free-flowing rockabilly. Some of Sharpe’s most important recordings were co-produced by the always fascinating Lee Hazlewood in 1959, which goes a long way to explaining why they sound so cool.

• Ray Sharpe’s songs have been recorded by acts ranging from Neil Young to swamp guitarist Danny James and bottleneck master J.B. Hutto, and his entire approach was a huge influence on Southwest rocker Bobby Fuller. These recordings also feature a virtual who’s who of fabulous musicians, including Duane Eddy, Al Casey, Buddy Wheeler and Larry Knechtel, among others.

• Total Time: 49:14 mins. - 20 tracks - also includes: 16-page booklet, rare photos, vintage visual memorabilia & detailed liner notes.

Reviews
Blues & Rhythm - Byron Foulger
All in all this is a pretty decent set of, for want of a better description, Chuck Berry-styled rock 'n' roll.
