Here is the finest single-CD compilation available of the 40s & 50s hits of one of the most exciting entertainers of them all: Lena Horne. This May Lena Horne died at the ripe age of 92. She was an exciting, dynamic performer of striking appearance and elegant style. With her satin-smooth, attractively husky voice, and stunning, exotic good looks she had been a great star for nearly seven decades - alongside the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Judy Garland.

Retrospective’s Stormy Weather pays tribute by encapsulating her career from her very first recording, her Judy Garland-sounding teenage debut track, That’sWhat Love Did To Me, through to 1959. There is a lively quartet of W.C. Handy hits, dixieland-style from 1941, as well as sessions with several of the great jazz bands, led by Charlie Barnet, Artie Shaw and Teddy Wilson. Also from the 40s are nine superb standards that include her marvellous interpretation of Stormy Weather, the finest ever recorded. Nine vibrant numbers from the 50spresent Lena Horne as the nightclub entertainer par excellence, closing with her unforgettable A New-Fangled Tango.
