As a tribute to Eddie Fisher: a great ‘hits collection’ from one of the biggest stars of the 50s, who died in September, aged 82. Philadelphian Eddie Fisher (b.1928) was among the most popular singers of the early and mid 50s – between 1952 and 1954 he scored no fewer than 33 hits! Retrospective’s I’m Walking Behind You (also the title of his biggest hit – No.1 on both sides of the Atlantic), contains an incredible 25 Top Twenty hits, 20 of whichmade the Top Ten. Six of these made the top spot, and eight became million sellers. Also included are two delightful duets with Perry Como, one of which, Maybe, made No.3.
Eddie Fisher became a popular sensation in 1951 with a million-selling update of the 20s number Any Time, and his remarkable string of smashes lasted until Cindy, Oh, Cindy, the final Top Ten entry, in 1956. His style epitomised the big-voiced balladeers of the 50s before the onslaught of rock ’n’ roll. He appeared in several films and had his own TV series. Famously, he had short, eventful marriages to Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor and Connie Stevens, and was father to Star Wars’ Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher.
