• Hadda Brooks was a classically trained pianist who made a living playing for dance rehearsals until it was suggested that she learn boogie-woogie to become the first artist signed to the Modern label in 1945. Once she began singing sensuous ballads the "Queen of the boogie" became the "Empress of torch blues". Jukebox hits and chart success gave her major billing and she made cameo appearances in several films as well as becoming one of the very first black women to have her own TV show

• This CD focuses on her classic Modern and Okeh recordings 1945-52 and includes some great trio work with guitarist Teddy Bunn and a rare session with Count Basie.
