• This Smithsonian Folkways collection is released to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Songs with a good tune and rousing lyrics both mirrored and inspired the events of this bitter conflict. They told tales of battle, slavery, emancipation, victory, and defeat; and a century and a half later, they enshrine the shattered brotherhood of a nation and the lessons taught by war.

• Popular American folksinger Tom Glazer (1914-2003) knew a good tune when he heard one, and on ‘A Treasury of Civil War Songs’, Glazer's crystal clear voice spins out classic songs that made history, while historian Patrick Warfield’s fascinating liner notes take us deeper into the history that made the songs.

• Tom Glazer (September 3, 1914 – February 21, 2003) was an American folk singer and songwriter - he composed "Because All Men Are Brothers", recorded by The Weavers and Peter, Paul and Mary; "A Dollar Ain't A Dollar Anymore" recorded by Pete Seeger and "Talking Inflation Blues", recorded by Bob Dylan (on the ‘Minnesota Party Tape’ 1960). His songs were also recorded by Burl Ives, the Kingston Trio, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra. Glazer made a number of children’s records and wrote the musical score for Elia Kazan film ‘A Face in the Crowd’ (1957).

• Total Time : 59 Mins Music - 25 Tracks - 20+ page booklet with extensive notes & historic images.
