MELINDA HUGHES graduated with Honours from TheMaastricht Conservatory of Music, the Netherlandsthen as a postgraduate from The Royal College ofMusic, London. She spent a year at The Brussels Operastudio and for two years she toured Europe with TheAndré Rieu Strauss Orchestra as a soloist. She has sungover fifteen of the major Lyric operatic roles in overforty countries. In 2007 she formed Kiss & Tell Cabaretwith co-writers Jeremy Limb and Lloyd Evans.
A couple of years ago I was searching for new materialto perform. I had heard a few Spoliansky songs butcouldn’t find any sheet music.Luckily GeraldineAuerbach at the Jewish Music Institute put me in touchwith Spolianksy’s grandson, Chris Kelly. This is whenmy wonderful journey of discovery began. Chrisintroduced me to Steve Edis (the font of all knowledgeSpoliansky). He played me song after delightful songon Spoliansky’s old piano. I was enchanted, not onlyby the melodies but by the stories that surroundedthem. Smoke and Noise “Shall und Rauch” is namedafter the Berlin Cabaret club Spoliansky wrote for overeighty years ago. Needless to say we are still tacklingthe same subjects today, hence our very own Kiss andTell replies.
