• Bako Dagnon is undoubtedly one of the best kept secrets of Malian music, and it has taken many years for her to find some, still growing, recognition. This stunning album, her second, can only hugely increase that. It’s a vibrant, compelling recording full of rich vocals, mesmerising melodies, subtle rhythms and fine musicianship.

• She is the perfect link between tradition and modernity, equally at ease with old griot traditions and with electric Afro-beat. She is being compared to the great African singers, especially Oumou Sangare, yet she has her own individual voice & style.

• ‘Sidiba’ is produced by Jean Lamoot (who has also produced Salif Keita) and Ibrahim Sylla, for his Syllart label - and features legendary electric guitarist Mama Cissoko, who worked with Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabate, as well as Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, and Souley Kanté on kamal ngoni(6-string guitar).

• The music touches on a number of different influences & styles from electric blues to restrained electronics, from Congolese guitar & Senegalese fiddle to North African traditions - with Bako Dagnon varying her vocals from energetic power to a rather quieter lyrical quality.

Reviews
Songlines - Jane Cornwell
Dagnon combines old and new. She interweaves a host of griot styles and purists will love Nouhumba. This is deep stuff.
