• ‘Thirteen Down’ was originally released on Stefan Grossman’s Kicking Mule label in 1979, not long after Bert Jansch had formed Conundrum as a touring band, after the break-up of Pentangle. It’s an album of strong Jansch compositions with his customary wide variety of influences including folk, jazz, pop and world music (before it was called that).
• The other members of Conundrum were : Martin Jenkins and Nigel Portman-Smith, both playing a number of different instruments, and Luce Langridge on drums. As it turned out, this was the only studio album this formation recorded. Pentangle vocalist Jacquie McShee guests on one track.
• Jansch’s guitar work is as fascinating as always, and he’s in fine form vocally too, with the band provide excellent support on this highly satisfying album - one of his best. Good to see it reissued again.
