This 2-CD set, the latest in Upbeat’s essential George Lewis series, comprises three original LPs—the final 2 LPs released under his contract with Norman Granz’s Verve label after his successful European tour in 1959, plus a popular re-mastered session for Jazz Man in 1953. The “Dr. Jazz and “Blues From The Bayou” albums are distinctive because of the varied repertoire, including tunes not normally associated with Lewis, which were picked up and used by the British trad bands of the era. The bonus “Jazz Man” tracks are regarded as some of the quintessential recordings of the Lewis band at a key period of its life, recorded at Capitol’s Hollywood studios, when they were enjoying success in San Francisco’s new Orleans revival. The band plays with a zest and freedom reflecting the free hand that Jazz Man gave them for the session, which includes a vocal version of his immortal “Burgundy Street Blues”. A Crescent City native, clarinettist Lewis was one of the last standard-bearers of true New Orleans jazz, playing with Bunk Johnson during the ‘40s, but hardly venturing beyond his home town until the early 50’s, but in his later years, with the burgeoning jazz boom in Europe, he found wide popularity during the ‘50s and ‘60s, the emotional warmth of his playing attracting many admirers. The booklet includes the sleeve notes from the original LPs.
