• Though this set begins with a 1947 track by an Art Blakey band called the Messengers, made up of fellow Muslim converts, the Jazz Messengers were essentially formed from the group nominally led by Horace Silver which recorded for Blue Note in 1954/55. When Silver left the band, Blakey carried on and over the years turned the outfit into something of a conservatory for up-and-coming musicians

• This well annotated double CD charts the band's progress through the changing personnel of the 1950s and includes Johnny Griffin, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter among the distinguished alumni.

• The collection ends with a live session in Paris featuring impromptu guest Bud Powell
