• The two albums on this CD, "In the Vernacular" (1959) and "No Coast Jazz" (1960), both originally on Roulette, were the first John Handy recorded as a leader. All tunes were composed by Handy, except two standards.

• The Texan alto saxophonist had gained experience working with Charles Mingus and Randy Weston.

• His flawlessly controlled playing is strong and inventively contemporary, but he also had a melodic, gentle style saved from sentimentality by the cutting edge of his tone.
