• Jazz pianist Kevin Hays is a musician with an enormous gift for the unusual. Born in New York City in 1968, he first performed at the age of 15, and was already playing at the age of 17 with baritone saxophonist Nick Brignola. Such jazz greats as Sonny Rollins and John Scofield have brought Hays into their bands.

• Yet independently Hays has developed his own ideas, and in the process made three CDs for the Blue Note label with such partners as bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette.

• ‘Variations’ is an album of solo piano - all composed by Hays, although including three variations on a theme by Robert Schumann. It is absorbing music which sometimes appears to be classical yet deeply breathes in the spirit of jazz, revealing Hays as jazz improviser who integrates the vocabulary of various epochs of piano music in an exceptionally natural way, transforming it into a distinctive musical language.
