• Percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has created an impressive body of recordings with The Ritual Trio and Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Here he is reunited with Billy Bang, a one-time member of the Ritual Trio.

• Bang, who died in 2011, had become a hero of the international avant garde, celebrated for the way he opened up and personalized the voice of his violin -- the warmth he got from his bluesy bowing and the fires he lit. He had returned from fighting in Vietnam a mentally disturbed man and the story goes that, having joined a revolutionary group, he went to a pawnshop to buy guns but opted instead for a $25 violin, an instrument he had learnt as a child
