• Founded in the 1960s, the Mtendeni Maulid Ensemble performs a visually and acoustically striking style of Sufi religious devotion called Maulidi ya Homu. The form has roots in the ancient Arab world, but today survives only in Zanzibar.

• The performances involve the recitation of poetry songs, dancing and a wide range of percussion, growing in intensity : there are three of these ‘dahalas’ here, two of them over 20 minutes in duration. The disc ends with an 8-minute devotional blessing, ‘Dua’.

• This sixth volume of ‘Zanzibara’ was recorded in March 2011 by the producer, Werner Graebner, and is released on Buda Musique, the label responsible for the incredible Ethiopiques series.
