• Saxophone magician Roland Kirk’s complete original 1961 album ‘We Free Kings’ (originally on Mercury), which was Kirk’s first LP for that label and his fourth as a leader. It showcases him in a quartet format with two outstanding rhythm sections.
• Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year, which completes the session, has been added here to the original album for the first time, as well as the only known alternate take from the sessions. As a further bonus : Kirk’s complete 1956 debut album, as leader, ‘Triple Threat’ (originally on King).
• Personnel : Rahsaan Roland Kirk, tenor sax, stritch, manzello, flute & siren, on all tracks, with (on ‘We Free Kings’): Richard Wyands, piano; Art Davis, bass; Charlie Persip, drums; and: Hank Jones, piano; Wendell Marshall, bass; Charlie Persip, drums. New York, August 16 & 17, 1961. On ‘Triple Threat’ with : Jimmy Madison (p), Carl Pruitt (b), Henry Hank Duncan (d). New York, November 9, 1956.
