• Still greatly under-rated, Gigi Gryce (1925-1983) was a fine, astringent altoist inspired by, among others, Charlie Parker, and also an inventive composer and arranger.
• It’s all abundantly evident on the four well crafted, highly accessible albums (1960-61) collected here, the last he made as leader. His feeling for the blues invigorates the albums Saying Somethin! and The Rat Race Blues; as does his approach to standards on The Hap’nin’s and to Ellington and Gillespie classics on Reminiscin’.
• The groups on these albums include : Richard Williams, Mickey Roker, Reggie Workman, Richard Wyands, Eddie Costa, & George Duvivier. 25 tracks - 24-bit digitally remastered.

The sound quality and recording balance are first-rate. A likely candidate for the 2012 top ten.,*****
